The panel matters far less than people expect
Most residential panels sold today are within a narrow band of efficiency, and the difference between brands changes annual production by a few percent. What changes your outcome by tens of percent is roof orientation, shading, system size relative to your usage, and what your utility credits exports at.
If a sales conversation spends more time on panel brand than on your export credit, that is a signal.
What actually determines production where you live

Annual average peak sun hours range from roughly 3.5 a day in the Pacific Northwest and northern New England to about 6.0 in Arizona. That is a difference of nearly 70% in output from identical hardware.
Roof orientation and pitch
South-facing is best in the northern hemisphere. East and west lose meaningful production; north-facing usually is not worth doing. Pitch matters less than orientation but is not nothing.
Shading
A single well-placed tree can cost more production than a panel upgrade will ever recover. Shading is assessed per roof plane, not per house.
Your usage pattern
Where export credit is well below the retail rate, production you use at the moment it is made is worth far more than production you export. That changes the right system size.
The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025.
You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit.
