What “near me” should actually mean
Proximity is a weak signal on its own. A company two towns over that has never pulled a permit in your municipality is not more local than one an hour away that pulls them weekly. What you want is a company whose installing contractor knows your building department and your utility's interconnection queue.
The five questions that separate companies
Who physically installs it?
Many companies that sell solar do not install it. That is normal, and it should be said plainly. Ask for the installing contractor's legal name and license number, then check it with your state board.
What structure am I being sold?
Cash, loan, lease and power purchase agreement are four different products. A $0-down loan and a $0-down PPA are advertised with nearly identical language and are not the same thing. One puts debt in your name.
What rate is the savings figure built on?
A savings estimate computed against a national average rate is not a savings estimate. Insist on your own utility's published rate.
What does the workmanship warranty cover?
There are three warranties: panel, inverter, and workmanship. The third is the one you live with when a roof penetration leaks in year seven, and it is the one most likely to be vague.
How is the federal credit described?
The residential credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025. If a company tells you in 2026 that you will get 30% back as a homeowner buying a system, that is wrong, and it tells you something about the rest of their pitch.

You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit. How do I find a solar company near me?
Start with the ownership structure you want, then verify the installing contractor's license and insurance with your state board, then check what utility rate the savings comparison is built on. Proximity matters less than whether the installer knows your permitting office.

Neither, categorically. Local companies usually know the permitting and interconnection process better; national companies bring process and financing depth. Ask who is on the roof and who honors the workmanship warranty and the distinction matters less.
