Any page called “best solar company” written by a solar company is marketing. What follows is the framework we would use as the homeowner, which works on us as well as on anyone else.
The framework
Start with the structure, not the company
Decide whether you want to own the system or buy the power. That single choice eliminates most of the field and changes which questions matter. Owning suits people with capital who will stay in the home. Buying the power suits people who want no upfront cost and no maintenance responsibility.
Then check who installs
Legal name, license number, insurance. Verify with your state board rather than taking a brochure's word.
Then check the maths
What utility rate is the comparison built on? What is the production estimate? What is the escalator? A company that shows you all three without being asked is telling you something.
Then check the complaints, not the rating
Every company with volume has complaints. Read how they were resolved. The one-star reviews describe the service experience, which is what you live with for twenty-five years.
Be suspicious of urgency
Rebates ending this month, credits expiring, limited ZIP availability. Almost all of it is a closing device. Real program deadlines exist, and a company that has one should be able to show you the filing.
The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025.
You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit.
