Any page called “best solar companies” written by a solar company is marketing. We are not going to pretend otherwise by handing ourselves a trophy. What we can do is give you the framework we would use if we were the homeowner, and name the kinds of company operating in Maryland so you know what you are looking at.

The four kinds of company you will encounter

National installers

Companies like Sunrun and Palmetto operate across many states, offer purchase, loan, lease and power purchase agreements, and either run their own crews or certify local ones. Scale means process; it can also mean you are a ticket number.

Regional installers

Companies like Trinity Solar in the Northeast self-perform installation inside a defined footprint. Usually stronger local knowledge, narrower geography.

Marketplaces and lead generators

EnergySage is a marketplace; EnergyBillCruncher is a lead generator. Neither installs anything. A marketplace introduces you to installers who pay to participate. A lead generator sells your contact details to whoever buys them. Both can be useful, but neither is accountable for your roof.

Sell-and-partner companies

This is us, and a large part of the industry. The company designs the system, manages the project and holds the agreement; a licensed local contractor installs. The thing to demand is that they name the contractor before scheduling.

What actually separates one company from another

Almost every solar company sells the same panels. What differs is the structure of the deal and who is accountable when something goes wrong. These are the questions that change the outcome:

Who owns the system?

Purchase, loan, lease and power purchase agreement are four different products with four different risk profiles. A loan puts debt in your name. A PPA does not, but you do not own the equipment or the renewable credits. Ask which one you are being sold before you ask about price.

Who physically installs it?

Many companies that sell solar do not install it. That is not automatically bad — it is how much of the industry works — but you should be told plainly, and you should know the installing contractor's name and license before anything is scheduled. What does the warranty actually cover, and who honours it?

There are usually three: the panel manufacturer's, the inverter manufacturer's, and the workmanship warranty from whoever put holes in your roof. The third one is the one that matters most and the one most likely to be vague. Ask specifically about roof penetrations.

Is the savings claim a projection or a guarantee?

Almost always a projection. Any company telling you it will cut your bill by a fixed percentage is describing a model, not a promise. Ask what escalator is built into the payment and what happens if production comes in under the estimate.

Is the federal credit being described correctly?

The residential credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025. If a 2026 ad promises you 30% back as a homeowner buying a system, that is wrong. Under third-party ownership the 48E credit goes to the system owner, not to you — which is a legitimate thing to say, and a different thing.
