BGE’s current rates expire at the end of 2026 and it filed a new rate case in July 2026 requesting roughly $8 per month more, with a 10.4% return on equity. The Office of People’s Counsel has said it will challenge that figure.

Why the number is what it is
What is actually driving this
PJM capacity costs
BGE buys from the same PJM wholesale market as every other Maryland utility. Capacity auction prices have climbed sharply and pass through to customers.
Data center demand
Large computing loads across the PJM footprint are arriving faster than new generation is being built, and the transmission to serve them is recovered from ratepayers.
Quarterly resets
BGE adjusts its Price to Compare four times a year rather than twice. That means smaller individual changes but more of them.
The honest cost picture
Why Maryland and Delaware bills keep climbing
BGE, Pepco and Delmarva Power are all subsidiaries of Exelon. Maryland’s Office of People’s Counsel has noted that since Exelon acquired BGE in 2012, electric rates have nearly doubled and gas rates have more than tripled.
The distribution side — the part you cannot shop away by switching suppliers — is where most of the increase sits. That is also the part solar offsets, because every kilowatt-hour your roof produces is one you do not pay distribution charges on.
In 2026 the PJM capacity auction cleared at its maximum price, driven largely by data-center demand arriving faster than new generation. Maryland’s Office of People’s Counsel estimated the resulting monthly increases at roughly $21 for BGE customers, $14 for Pepco, $18 for Potomac Edison and $4 for Delmarva Power.
Two ways to pay for solar, and they are very different
If you buy the system
You own the equipment, you keep any renewable energy credits, and you carry the maintenance responsibility. Installed pricing varies by roof, shading and system size.
If you use a PPA
$0 upfront. We install and own the system; you buy the power it produces at a rate set in your agreement, and you only pay for what it actually generates. The system owner carries maintenance for the life of the agreement.

The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit. What remains applies to the owner of the system — which, under a PPA, is us. SolarAmerica does not provide tax advice; talk to your tax professional about your situation.
Going solar with BGE
BGE net metering and solar programs
When your panels make more power than your home is using, the extra flows onto BGE’s grid and is credited on your BGE bill under Maryland’s net metering rules. How much each exported kilowatt-hour is worth is set by those rules, and it is one of the biggest factors in how your system should be sized. How net metering works in Maryland.
Does BGE have a solar program?
BGE connects home solar systems to its grid and credits the power you send back, but it does not install panels. State incentives are covered in our Maryland solar incentives guide, and SolarAmerica handles the BGE interconnection application for you.
How do I sign up for net metering with BGE?
There is no separate sign-up. It is set up as part of the interconnection application your installer files with BGE before your system is turned on, and SolarAmerica files it for you.

Why is BGE's Price to Compare lower than the all-in rate?
Because the two numbers measure different things. BGE's supply charge is lower; its distribution charges and riders are higher. What matters to your budget is the all-in figure — your bill divided by your kilowatt-hours.
How often does this change?
The Standard Offer supply rate is set for a summer period (June–September) and a winter period (October–May), with small rider adjustments in February, June and October. The next summer price is set in November 2026.
Can I shop for supply?
Yes. Maryland is deregulated, and switching suppliers changes only the supply portion of your bill.
