Solar battery backup in New York
Storage is sold on savings and bought for resilience. Here is which one applies where you live.

The state-specific part
What a battery is actually worth in New York
New York credits exports through the VDER value stack rather than 1:1, which generally lands between 60% and 90% of retail depending on your utility and the hours you export. That gap is what makes storage financially interesting here rather than purely a resilience purchase. NYSERDA pays an upfront incentive toward the battery, and most New York utilities pay battery owners every summer. See the programs.
What a battery does and does not do
It does keep selected circuits running in an outage
Not the whole house, in most designs. A typical residential battery backs up a critical loads panel: refrigeration, some lighting, outlets, internet, a well pump, sometimes a single heat pump zone. Whole-home backup requires either much more storage or careful load management.
It does not, by itself, make solar work at night
It shifts daytime production into evening use. How much depends on the battery's usable capacity and how much surplus your array actually makes.
Solar without a battery shuts down in an outage
This surprises people. A grid-tied inverter is required to disconnect when the grid goes down, for the safety of line workers. Without storage and the correct switching, panels on a sunny roof produce nothing for you during a blackout.
Sizing, honestly
Start from what you want to survive rather than from a product. Add up the loads you actually need for the duration you actually experience. A household that loses power for four hours twice a year has a very different answer from one at the end of a rural line that goes down for three days after every ice storm.
The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit. What remains under 48E applies to the owner of the system — which, under a PPA, is us. SolarAmerica does not provide tax advice; talk to your tax professional about your situation.
Battery backup, in hours
How long would a battery keep your New York home running?
Pick what you would want on during an outage. The estimate shows how many hours one or more batteries cover with no sun at all, which is the honest worst case for a storm.
Hours are an estimate from typical appliance draws, not a measurement of your home. A well pump or furnace cycling hard in a cold snap uses more; a mild day uses less. Your installer confirms what the battery covers, circuit by circuit, before anything is signed. Battery size uses 13.5 kWh usable per unit, a common whole-home battery.
New York battery incentives
New York pays toward the battery, then pays you to use it
Up front: NYSERDA’s residential storage incentive
NYSERDA’s residential energy storage incentive is open to homeowners for batteries up to 25 kWh, with or without solar, installed by a NYSERDA participating contractor. It is paid per kilowatt-hour of storage through your installer and taken off your price. It launched at $250 per kWh in Con Edison territory and $200 per kWh in the rest of the state, and NYSERDA’s Inclusive Storage Incentive adds a higher rate, $450 per kWh at launch, for income-eligible homes and disadvantaged communities. Rates step down as funding blocks fill, so your installer confirms the open block for your address.
Every summer: your utility pays your battery to help at peak times
| Utility | Program | Payment |
|---|---|---|
| National Grid | ConnectedSolutions: summer peak events, May–September | $50 per kW |
| NYSEG and RG&E | Energy Storage Solutions: up to 20 summer events, May–September | $50 per kW |
| Orange & Rockland | Smart Savers Battery Program: summer events, May–September | $50 per kW |
| Con Edison | Bring Your Own Battery: summer performance, May–September | $100 per kW |

Questions
The things people actually ask
Is a solar battery worth it in New York?
New York credits exports through the VDER value stack rather than 1:1, which generally lands between 60% and 90% of retail depending on your utility and the hours you export.
Will solar keep my lights on in a blackout without a battery?
No. A grid-tied inverter must disconnect when the grid goes down, for line-worker safety. Without storage and the right switching, a sunny roof produces nothing for you during an outage.
Does a battery back up the whole house?
Usually not. Most residential designs back up a critical loads panel. Whole-home backup needs much more capacity or active load management.
Does New York pay for home batteries?
Yes. NYSERDA's residential storage incentive pays per kWh of battery storage through the installer, and National Grid, NYSEG, RG&E, Orange & Rockland and Con Edison pay battery owners for output during summer peak events.
