Solar plus battery versus a standby generator

What storage does in the real world, rather than in a brochure.

The real trade

They solve the same problem in opposite ways

A generator makes power for as long as you feed it fuel. A battery stores power you already made and runs out. Which is better depends almost entirely on how long your outages last.

The honest recommendation

If you lose power for a few hours several times a year, a battery is the better experience: silent, instant, no maintenance, and it does something useful the other 360 days. If you are at the end of a rural line and lose power for three days after every ice storm, a generator is the more reliable answer and a battery alone will disappoint you.

Pairing solar with a battery changes the calculation, because the array recharges the battery each day. That turns a several-hour device into something that can carry critical loads through a multi-day outage, provided you are disciplined about what you run.

Questions

The things people actually ask

Is a battery or a generator better for a long outage?

A generator, unless the battery is paired with solar that recharges it daily. Batteries are measured in hours; generators run while fuel lasts.

Can a battery run my whole house?

Usually not. Most residential installations back up a critical loads panel rather than the entire service.

Do I need a transfer switch either way?

Yes. Both require proper switching to isolate your home from the grid during an outage. This is a code requirement and a line-worker safety issue.

About 60 seconds. No cost, no obligation, and we will tell you if solar does not make sense for your home.
