What is actually driving this
Delivery is the bigger half
On Long Island the delivery charge typically exceeds the supply charge. That portion funds the transmission and distribution system and does not fall when wholesale power gets cheaper.
Island geography
Long Island sits at the end of the grid. Power is imported across constrained interfaces and cables, and the cost of that constraint lands in what customers pay.
Storm hardening after Sandy
The system has carried a sustained capital programme since 2012 to harden against coastal storms. Those investments are recovered through rates over decades.
No supply shopping
Upstate New Yorkers can buy supply from a competitive supplier. Long Island customers cannot, so there is no shopping route to a lower bill — reducing what you buy is the only lever.
What a roof does against it
Production against a 25.0¢ rate
This part of New York averages about 3.9 peak sun hours a day, so a kilowatt of panels produces roughly 1,138 kilowatt-hours a year. A 9 kW system makes around 10,262 kilowatt-hours annually — about $2,566 of PSEG Long Island electricity a year at the current rate.
That is production value, not a savings figure. What you actually keep depends on how much of it you use directly versus export, what PSEG Long Island credits exports at, and what you pay for the system. Under a power purchase agreement there is no upfront cost and you buy the production at an agreed rate instead.
The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit. What is PSEG Long Island's electric rate per kWh?
Long Island residential electricity runs about 25.0 cents per kilowatt-hour all-in, meaning supply, delivery and riders combined, as of August 2026. That is well above the national average of roughly 18 cents and above the upstate New York utilities, where NYSEG sits near 18.3 cents. For your exact figure, divide your total bill by the kilowatt-hours shown on it.
Why is my PSEG Long Island bill so high?
Two structural reasons. First, delivery typically costs more than supply on Long Island, and delivery pays for a transmission and distribution system serving an island at the end of the grid, including a sustained storm-hardening programme since 2012. Second, unlike upstate New York there is no retail supply choice on Long Island, so there is no competitive supplier route to a lower rate.
Is LIPA the same as PSEG Long Island?
They are different entities. LIPA, the Long Island Power Authority, is a municipal power authority that owns the transmission and distribution system. PSEG Long Island operates that system under contract to LIPA. Your bill comes from PSEG Long Island; the assets and the debt sit with LIPA. Neither is rate-regulated by the New York Public Service Commission in the way the upstate investor-owned utilities are.
Can I shop for a cheaper electricity supplier on Long Island?
No. Long Island does not have retail electric supply choice. Upstate New York customers of NYSEG, National Grid, RG&E and the other investor-owned utilities can buy supply from a competitive supplier, but that market does not extend to the LIPA service territory. On Long Island the only way to reduce what you pay is to reduce or offset what you buy.
