Why the number is what it is
What is actually driving this
2025 was the year that moved
JCP&L customers absorbed a 20.20% increase in 2025 — the steepest of any New Jersey utility. The 2026 auction added only 1.6% on top, about $2.23 a month at 650 kWh. The level is the point, not this year's change.
PJM capacity costs
JCP&L buys from PJM, the same wholesale market serving Pennsylvania. The 2025 capacity price surge passed through to every utility in the footprint.
Why JCP&L's supply rate is lower
At roughly 14.6 cents, JCP&L's BGS is well below PSE&G's 19.9 cents. That reflects the load profile of its customer base and how suppliers bid in the auction. Its all-in rate is correspondingly lower, near 20 cents.
The honest cost picture
Two ways to pay for solar, and they are very different
If you buy the system
You own the equipment, you keep any renewable energy credits, and you carry the maintenance responsibility. Installed pricing varies by roof, shading and system size.
If you use a PPA
$0 upfront. We install and own the system; you buy the power it produces at a rate set in your agreement, and you only pay for what it actually generates. The system owner carries maintenance for the life of the agreement.
The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025.
You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit. What remains applies to the owner of the system — which, under a PPA, is us. SolarAmerica does not provide tax advice; talk to your tax professional about your situation.

JCP&L questions
The things people actually ask
Is JCP&L cheaper than PSE&G?
On supply, yes — about 14.6 cents against 19.9. All-in, JCP&L runs near 20 cents versus PSE&G's 26. But JCP&L absorbed the largest single-year increase in the state in 2025.
Should I switch suppliers?
As of mid-2026, competitive offers in JCP&L territory were not meaningfully below the 14.6 cent BGS. Shopping makes more sense in PSE&G and Atlantic City Electric territory.
When does the rate change?
The NJBPU runs the BGS auction each February and the new rate period begins June 1.
