The question everyone asks first

Is there a Illinois state solar tax credit?

None. Illinois has no state solar income tax credit. What it has instead is a renewable energy credit program that pays real money, plus utility rebates.

The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025.

You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit. What remains under 48E applies to the owner of the system — which, under a PPA, is us. SolarAmerica does not provide tax advice; talk to your tax professional about your situation.

What actually exists

Illinois Shines (SREC payments)

The state buys the renewable energy credits your system produces under a 15-year contract, with roughly half the value paid in the first year. Typical reported figures for a residential system run around $7,963–$9,140, paid about a year after installation. Capacity is allocated in blocks; when a block fills, new applicants are waitlisted and receive the rate in effect when approved. Your installer applies on your behalf as an Approved Vendor — you do not claim it directly.

ComEd and Ameren distributed generation rebate

$300 per kW of DC solar capacity for systems with a smart inverter, plus $300 per kWh of battery storage. Roughly $2,400 on an 8 kW system, and around $4,000 on a 13.5 kWh battery. Paid directly to the customer and does not require Illinois Shines participation.

⚠ The rebate has a permanent cost attached

Accepting the DG rebate is reported to lock you permanently into supply-only net metering. If you installed before January 1, 2025 and hold grandfathered full-retail net metering, taking the rebate forfeits that status and it cannot be undone. For a new installation the trade is usually neutral, because supply-only is already what you would get. For an existing system it may not be.

Illinois Solar for All

Income-qualified program with a statutory cap: ongoing cost cannot exceed 50% of the value of the electricity produced. Works with third-party ownership. The 2026–27 cycle was reported to open in June 2026.

Tax exemptions

Illinois exempts solar from added property tax assessment and exempts equipment from sales tax. The property exemption is not automatic in every county — form PTAX-340 has to be filed with your county assessor.

If you use a lease or a PPA

Under a lease or PPA the installer claims the RECs and rebates and reflects that in the structure of your agreement. You still receive the net metering credits on your own bill.

Verify before you rely on any of this.

State and utility programs change on their own schedules, blocks fill, and capacity caps close things early. Everything here was checked in August 2026 and is dated for that reason. Confirm the current terms with your utility or your state commission before you make a financial decision, and treat any company quoting you a hard expiry date as a closing device until they show you the filing.
