Data centers and your Delaware electric bill

Where the increase is actually coming from, and why switching suppliers does not touch it.

What is actually happening

Your bill is rising because of the grid, not because of your utility's margin

Delaware buys into PJM alongside Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Ohio and Virginia, so the same capacity auction that cleared at the price cap flows into Delaware delivery charges.

Why data centers show up on a household bill

Capacity markets pay generators to be available in future years. When large new loads are announced faster than new generation is built, the price of that availability rises for everyone in the market, including households that use exactly as much power as they did last year. Transmission upgrades to serve those loads are allocated across the same rate base.

The practical consequence is that this cost lands in the delivery portion of the bill. Shopping for a cheaper supplier does not touch it. That is the part most homeowners get wrong, and it is why supplier-switching offers rarely deliver what they appear to.

What a homeowner can actually do about it

Very little about the market. Something about exposure. Producing a portion of your own power reduces the number of kilowatt-hours you buy at whatever the rate becomes, and a power purchase agreement sets the rate you pay for that portion in advance. That is not a savings guarantee and we are not going to dress it up as one — it is a change in how much of your consumption is exposed to the next increase.

Be careful with the framing you will see elsewhere

Rate pressure is real and it is also being used as an urgency device. Advertisements claiming a rebate that expires this month, a 30% credit that a homeowner can still claim on a 2026 purchase, or a government program that pays for your system are not describing anything that exists. The residential federal credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025.

Questions

The things people actually ask

Are data centers really raising electricity bills in Delaware?

Delaware buys into PJM alongside Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Ohio and Virginia, so the same capacity auction that cleared at the price cap flows into Delaware delivery charges.

Will switching electricity suppliers fix it?

No. Capacity and transmission costs sit in the delivery portion of your bill, which you cannot shop. Switching suppliers changes only the supply portion.

Does solar protect me from this?

It reduces how many kilowatt-hours you buy at whatever the rate becomes, and under a power purchase agreement the rate for your own production is set in advance. It is a reduction in exposure, not a guarantee of savings.
