The question everyone asks first

Is there a Virginia state solar tax credit?

None. Virginia has no state solar income tax credit. What it has instead is full retail net metering, which in practice does more work than most state credits do.

The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025.

You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit. What remains under 48E applies to the owner of the system — which, under a PPA, is us. SolarAmerica does not provide tax advice; talk to your tax professional about your situation.

What actually exists

Virginia solar incentives in 2026

Sales and use tax exemption

Virginia exempts solar equipment from state sales and use tax. Your installer applies it at invoice; there is no form for you to file.

Property tax exemption — but check your locality

Our sources disagree on how this works. Some describe an automatic statewide exemption; others describe it as a local option, where Virginia allows localities to exempt up to 80% of the added value and it applies only if your city or county has adopted it. Confirm with your county or city assessor before assuming your assessment will not move.

SRECs

The Virginia Clean Economy Act created an SREC market. Virginia SRECs have recently been reported trading around $27–$33 each, and you earn one per megawatt-hour produced.

What actually carries the economics

With no state credit and no federal residential credit, Virginia rests on full retail net metering plus the tax exemptions. Regulators have defended that structure twice recently — rejecting Appalachian Power’s proposed cuts in 2025 and leaving Dominion’s arrangement intact in a 2026 ruling under SCC Case No. PUR-2024-00047.

If you use a lease or a PPA

Under a lease or PPA the system owner holds the SRECs and the federal credit; your benefit is the power price and no upfront cost. You still receive the net metering credits on your bill.

Verify before you rely on any of this.

State and utility programs change on their own schedules, blocks fill, and capacity caps close things early. Everything here was checked in August 2026 and is dated for that reason. Confirm the current terms with your utility or your state commission before you make a financial decision, and treat any company quoting you a hard expiry date as a closing device until they show you the filing.
