This is an estimate, not a savings guarantee.
It uses published utility rates, NREL regional sun data and a standard system derate. It does not know your roof orientation, your shading, your usage pattern or what your utility will charge next year. No solar company can honestly guarantee savings, and any that does is describing a model rather than making a promise.
Why the utility matters more than the state
Statewide averages hide enormous variation. In Pennsylvania, Duquesne Light customers pay around 23¢ all-in while Met-Ed customers pay around 19¢ — a 20% difference on the same roof in the same state. In New York the spread is wider still, from about 20¢ on upstate National Grid to nearly 34¢ with Con Edison. A calculator using a state average will be wrong for most people in the state.
What “all-in” means here
Supply plus delivery plus riders, which is the number that actually appears on your bill divided by your kilowatt-hours. It is not the Price to Compare, and it is not the supply rate alone. Solar offsets what you would otherwise buy, so the all-in figure is the correct comparison.
This distinction trips up a lot of savings maths. Comparing a solar rate against a supply-only figure makes solar look worse than it is; comparing it against a projected future rate makes it look better than it is. The honest comparison is against today's all-in number.
You do not choose your utility
Your delivery utility is set by your address. In deregulated states — Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, Illinois, Ohio and Texas — you can shop the supply portion. You cannot shop delivery, which is where capacity and transmission costs land, and that is the portion that has been rising fastest.
What to do with the number
Take the production value figure and compare it against what the system would cost you annually. Under a purchase, that is the amortized cost plus any maintenance. Under a power purchase agreement, it is the rate you pay per kilowatt-hour multiplied by production. If the agreement rate is below your all-in utility rate and the escalator stays below your utility's rate of increase, the PPA wins. If not, it does not, and we will tell you that.
