What North Carolina actually pays for the power your roof sends back, and why that number decides more than the panels do.

Why this matters more than the panels
Two structures, and which one you get matters enormously
Export credit is the mechanism that decides what your roof is worth. Two identical systems on identical roofs can differ by years of payback purely because of which export structure they landed on. In North Carolina that is the variable to understand before you look at a single panel spec.
Duke Energy — Net Metering Bridge Rider (NMB)
A transitional structure that avoids the mandatory time-of-use and critical peak pricing required under Residential Solar Choice, with a small minimum bill. Customers who enroll are reported to hold it for 15 years from interconnection.

Our sources do not agree. Some report availability through December 31, 2026; at least one reports October 1, 2027. All of them agree it is subject to annual capacity limits, which means it can close before any stated date once the yearly limit is reached. We are not going to pick one of those dates and present it as fact. Confirm the current status with Duke or the North Carolina Utilities Commission before making a decision on timing, and treat any company using a hard deadline as a closing device with skepticism.
Duke Energy — Residential Solar Choice (RSC)
The default for customers who do not take the Bridge Rider. Time-of-use based, with exports credited at Duke's avoided cost — reported around 3.4¢/kWh, roughly 75–80% below the retail rate. Midday production, when your roof makes the most, is off-peak.
Dominion Energy North Carolina
Reported as still offering 1:1 net metering, which is materially better than either Duke structure. Your utility is set by your address.
Cooperatives and municipals
Terms vary. Blue Ridge EMC, for example, is reported to offer a choice between retail net metering and net billing. If a co-op serves you, call them; do not assume a statewide rule applies.
Verify before you rely on any of this.
State and utility programs change on their own schedules, blocks fill, and capacity caps close things early. Everything here was checked in August 2026 and is dated for that reason. Confirm the current terms with your utility or your state commission before you make a financial decision, and treat any company quoting you a hard expiry date as a closing device until they show you the filing.
What it means for your roof
The arithmetic in North Carolina
North Carolina averages about 4.6 peak sun hours a day, so a kilowatt of panels produces roughly 1,343 kilowatt-hours a year here. Every one of those kilowatt-hours is worth one of two very different things: the retail rate, if you use it in the house at the moment it is produced, or whatever your export structure pays, if you send it to the grid.
That gap is the reason system sizing and, in some structures, storage matter so much. Sizing a system to maximize exports under a structure that pays little for exports is a design error, and it is a common one.

Am I grandfathered if I already have solar?
Grandfathering depends on your interconnection date, and in some states on whether you accepted a rebate. Check your own interconnection date rather than assuming a change applies to you.
Does a battery help?
It depends on the gap between your retail rate and your export credit. Where exports are worth far less than retail, storing production for later use captures the difference. Where exports are credited at or near retail, that gap does not exist and storage is a resilience purchase.
