How to lower your Rhode Island electric bill

Read your bill properly
Find three numbers: kilowatt-hours used, the supply rate, and the delivery rate. Most people only ever look at the total, which tells you nothing about which one moved.
Pull twelve months of usage
Your utility's online account has it. A bill that rises every January is a heating problem. A bill that rose in a month with normal weather is a rate or supplier problem.
Check your supplier
You can shop supply separately from delivery in Rhode Island. Compare your supplier rate against the utility default. Teaser rates that roll to variable are the most common cause of a sudden jump.
Thermostat setbacks
A few degrees for eight hours a day is genuinely material over a heating season, and it costs nothing.
Cheap, this month
Under a few hundred dollars
LED conversion for the fixtures actually in daily use. Weatherstripping on exterior doors. Sealing attic bypasses. Cleaning refrigerator coils. A smart thermostat if you do not already have one. None of these are exciting and all of them shrink the bill and the solar system you would eventually need.
Bigger, and worth it in Rhode Island
Attic insulation to current code depth. A heat pump water heater, which typically cuts water heating energy substantially. Sealing and insulating ducts if you have forced air. At 29.5¢ a kilowatt-hour, Rhode Island usage reductions are worth more than they are in cheap-power states.
Then, and only then, generation
Once your usage is as low as it is going to get, the remaining question is what you pay per kilowatt-hour for what is left. A kilowatt of panels produces roughly 1,197 kilowatt-hours a year here, so a 9 kW system makes about 10,773 kilowatt-hours — roughly $3,178 of electricity a year at 29.5¢. Under a power purchase agreement there is no upfront cost and you buy the production at an agreed rate.
Doing this in the other order — solar first, efficiency second — means paying to generate power you did not need to use.
The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025.
You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit. How can I lower my electric bill in Rhode Island?

Does switching electricity suppliers save money?
