Why your Pennsylvania electric bill is so high
The three usual causes, what Pennsylvania utilities actually charge, and what genuinely brings the number down.

First, the honest diagnosis
A high bill is usually one of three things
1. You are using more than you think
Electric heat, a heat pump running in shoulder season, a second refrigerator, a hot tub, an EV, or a teenager. Pull twelve months of usage from your utility's online account before you do anything else. Kilowatt-hours, not dollars — dollars hide whether the problem is usage or price.
2. The rate went up
Pennsylvania residential electricity sits around 21.1¢ per kilowatt-hour all-in as of August 2026. If your usage is flat and your bill is not, this is your answer, and there is nothing you did wrong.
3. You are on the wrong supply arrangement
Your state allows you to shop supply separately from delivery. A supplier contract that rolled onto a variable rate after a teaser period is a common and expensive surprise. Check the supply line on your bill against your utility default rate.

Based on 4.1 peak sun hours a day and a 80% derate. Deliberately rough — it ignores shading, roof orientation and available roof area.
What actually helps
In order of how much they move the number
Fix the usage first
Air sealing and attic insulation, a heat pump water heater, LED conversion, and a smart thermostat. Unglamorous, cheap relative to a solar system, and they shrink the system you need. Doing solar first and efficiency second means paying to generate power you did not have to use.
Check the supply line
If you are on a third-party supplier, compare their rate to your utility default. Rolling off a teaser rate is the single most common cause of a bill that jumped for no visible reason.
Then look at production
A kilowatt of panels produces roughly 1,197 kilowatt-hours a year in Pennsylvania. A 9 kW system makes about 10,773 kilowatt-hours annually, worth roughly $2,273 at 21.1¢. Under a power purchase agreement there is no upfront cost and you buy the power at a set rate instead.
The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025.
You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit.
