The question everyone asks first

Is there a California state solar tax credit?

None. California has never had a state solar income tax credit, and it does not have one now. If someone tells you otherwise, they are wrong.

The residential federal tax credit (25D) ended for systems purchased after December 31, 2025.

You will still see ads promising a 30% credit that “ends December 31.” Read the date on them. If you buy a system today as a homeowner, you cannot claim that credit. What remains under 48E applies to the owner of the system — which, under a PPA, is us. SolarAmerica does not provide tax advice; talk to your tax professional about your situation.

What actually exists

California solar incentives in 2026

Property tax exclusion

California excludes the added assessed value of a qualifying solar system from your property tax under Revenue and Taxation Code section 73 — a $30,000 system adds $0 to your assessment. This exclusion is currently scheduled to sunset on January 1, 2027 unless the Legislature extends it. Systems completed after that date may trigger reassessment.

SGIP battery rebates

The Self-Generation Incentive Program pays for storage. The picture in 2026 is genuinely mixed and our sources disagree: some report the general residential budget closed to new applicants at the end of 2025, others report standard residential still open at Step 7. The income-qualified budgets — Residential Solar and Storage Equity and DAC-SASH — are consistently reported as open, at rates around $1,100 per kWh of storage plus $3,100 per kW of paired solar, with waitlists where territory funds are reserved. Check the current step and budget status with your utility before you count on any figure here.

DAC-SASH

Fully subsidised systems for income-qualifying homeowners in designated disadvantaged communities. Requires GRID Alternatives screening before work begins.

The rate structure itself

California's retail rates are among the highest in the country, and under time-of-use pricing the 4–9pm window is where a solar-plus-battery system earns. That is not an incentive, but it is the largest part of the economics.

If you use a lease or a PPA

Under a lease or PPA the company that owns the panels holds the incentives and the export credits; your benefit is the power price and the absence of an upfront cost.

Verify before you rely on any of this.

State and utility programs change on their own schedules, blocks fill, and capacity caps close things early. Everything here was checked in August 2026 and is dated for that reason. Confirm the current terms with your utility or your state commission before you make a financial decision, and treat any company quoting you a hard expiry date as a closing device until they show you the filing.
